U BAKA H ILL


A nationally known drummer, performer and visual artisit since 1975, Ubaka Hill has woven the percussive rhythms of poetry and song into messages of healing, leadership, social and creative inventiveness. Her rhythmic, lyrical and poetic style is an exciting and joyful blend of jazz, raggae, Afro-Caribbean/African Latin and free-form improvisation. She is the founder of the Drumsong Institute, a resource network for drummers and she is the publisher/editor of Drumsong: Drumming WomynÕs News Views and Attitudes newsletter. She has just released her first recording, ShapeShifters.


Workshop Description:

A fun and empowering exploration of the art and spirit of rhythm and drumming that fosters individual creative self-expression.

Explore drumming as a healing and re-connecting tool.

Learn complete drum songs based on various cultural rhythmic styles. We will focus on developing and improving playing techniques, breathing, tonal clarity, concentration, dexterity, tone and time dynamics, creative inventiveness, vocalizing and community drumming.

All levels welcome -- from first-time to advanced drummers -- Learn at your own pace, play from your own center
