WINTER SOLSTICE 1995 - Issue Number 34

The Inn Becomes Barrier-Free

Our renovation project to become handicap accessible will be finished by the end of January! (only a month behind schedule!) It has been a lengthy and time-consuming undertaking but we are thrilled with the final result, and looking forward to showing it off to our friends and inn guests.

For those of you who haven't been following our progress, I'll give a brief summary of the project. We began last April with a couple of volunteer work bees to tear off the old structure, which we fondly called "the pub room". Later in April and during the first part of May, good friends Phill Hunt and Victor McManemy dug and poured the new foundation and did some foundation work for the existing structure (yes, the Inn was slowly sinking!). In early June we held the timberframing and stress skin workshops led by timberframer Gary Cook. It was a magical two weeks witnessing the emergence of the spectacular timber frame structure. The roof went on in late June, just before the yoga retreat. Over the summer we worked on quieter projects so as not to disturb the guests, such as putting in the windows and doors, and putting up the stud walls. In the fall we worked around the guest schedule; every time the guests would drive off to go eat or sightsee, the hammers and saws would come out. Drywalling, electrical, plumbing, building shelves, laying flooringit all happened bit by bit. Throughout the project, carpenters Ann Perrault, Jeff Anderson and Daryl Jaques have lovingly and generously contributed their time, energy, skills and ideas.

Once it's finished, we will have a first floor bedroom and handicap accessible bathroom; a brand new beautiful kitchen and utility room; and a spectacular 2nd floor yoga and meeting space. Please come and see it soon!

We are in awe of the process, and of the loving energy of all who helped to make it a reality. Our heartfelt thanks to the following folks (and to any folks we forgot):

Some of the Timber Framing Crew:
Gary Cook, Art Wolfe, Jeff Anderson, John Szumera, John Van Zwedan, Richard Andres
