The GWEN tower was never built and the funding for this insanenuclear war strategy was stopped thanks to all the citizens whoapposed GWEN, especially Nancy Foster who coordinated a nation-widecampaign againist GWEN. (details in Synapse Number 12, Summer 1990)
Oppose Construction of GWENTower
Whereas, The question of possible environmental and healtheffects from GWEN is currently unresolved; and,
Whereas, GWEN would not benefit Grand Traverse County interms of economics, scenic enhancement, or an increased standard ofliving for area residents; and,
Whereas, GWEN's cost contributes to the increasing federaldeficit at a time when the nation's priorities are shifting todomestic issues; and,
Whereas, the GWEN system currently functions with itsexisting network and its strategic need is in question;' and,
Whereas, the Grant Township Board passed a resolutionopposing the construction of a GWEN site within the township; and,
Whereas, a significant number of Grand Traverse Countycitizens have petitioned and were present at a public hearingexpressing opposition to GWEN,
Now, therefore, be it resolved by this board ofcommissioners, that, Grand Traverse County opposes the constructionof a GWEN tower within our county and respectfully request ourfederal representatives to terminate the program within our county,
Be it further resolved, that copies of this resolution beforwarded to our Congressional Representatives urging their supportof the same.
