• Vermicomposting (building a worm bin): Becky Jo Farrington, Environmental Education Manager at Urban Options, in Lansing will lead a workshop on how to build a vermicompostingbin or “worm bin.” Participants will have a hands-on experience in observing live red-worm and other worm bin animals as well as gain knowledge of the “garbage cycle” as it relates to food waste and how they can reduce their impact on our waste stream. Second session:
• Creating a Green Marketplace, where sustainable products and ideas can be shared with the community; by Maura Breenan, local activist and attorney
• Transition Town, led by Steve DeGoosh, professor of geography, planning and sustainability courses at Northern Michigan University and founder of Transition UP and Transition Marquette (http://transitionus.org)
• Growing Canola for Biodiesel: Bill Koucky, Leelanau County farmer, will talk about his experience producing canola oil from locally grown canola to be used as a fryer oil for food and then recovering the used oil to produce biodiesel. This keeps the biodiesel sustainable and local. He has planted, harvested, crushed seeds to oil, and produced biodiesel from the local crop on his own as well as encouraging other local farmers to grow canola as well.
